Playing Torchlight 2 using PS3/PS4/XBox controller
Torchlight 2 is one of my favorite games on PC. Although I don’t (have time to) play game much these days, I still like using the controller more than keyboard and mouse. That’s why I tried to search on google about using PS3 controller to play Torchlight 2. Wow, the solution did exist.

What is Torchlight 2?
Torchlight 2 is a very popular Hack and Slash, action RPG, dungeon crawler game. It’s like Diablo 2 but with cuter design. I don’t play Diablo 2 so that I don’t want to compare these two games. Anyway, I like playing this game when I don’t want to think much :D. Just go out and slash the monsters.
How to play this game with controller?
Install driver for PS3 controller
If you have XBox controller, skip this step.
PS3 controller is not officially supported in Windows OS. We need to install SCP Toolkit to install the driver. SCP Toolkit also supports installing driver to connect to PS3 via bluetooth. Cool?
Here we need to choose the bluetooth device, PS3 device then click Install and we’re done.
SCP Toolkit will tell PC that the PS3 is an XBox controller :)).
XInput Mapper
Next we need to map the buttons on controller to hotkeys in Torchlight 2. To do it, we need the XInput Mapper. Just download it and turn it on. There’s a file called t2.mappings
. It’s for configuring the mapping between controller buttons and Torchlight 2 hotkeys.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- It’s fun. I always like to play game using controller.
- It’s new experience. You need to learn how to play the game in a different way.
- Know some new tools.
Cons
- It’s harder to play, especially using range attack and skills.
- Learning new thing is annoying sometimes. You need to overcome that struggle feeling. It took me 1-2 days to find the correct way to do it.
Conclusion
Fuck yeah! I love it. I have been playing games using controller from 6 years old so that I’m familiar with it more than mouse and keyboard. Yeah baby!
